A man in Jiangsu spent 10.73 million yuan on his girlfriend over six years, and after she graduated, she suddenly proposed breaking up. The man demanded a return, but the woman said, "You voluntarily gave me this, why should I give it back?" The court ruled.

Recently, a love dispute in Jiangsu attracted widespread social attention.

A man and his girlfriend had been dating for six years, during which he purchased a Porsche worth 1.18 million yuan, covered all expenses for her overseas studies, and bought a house worth 930k yuan for her parents, with total expenditures reaching 10.73 million yuan.

However, after graduation, the girlfriend suddenly proposed breaking up and refused to marry the man. It is reported that the man and the girlfriend met six years ago, and their relationship was once very deep. To express his feelings, the man made extensive sacrifices during their relationship. Besides the Porsche and the house for her parents, he also paid all the costs for her overseas studies, including tuition and living expenses. The total amount spent nearly exhausted his savings accumulated over many years.

The man stated that all his efforts were based on the intention to marry the girlfriend, and he looked forward to walking into marriage together after her return from studying abroad. But unexpectedly, after returning to China, the girlfriend not only did not mention marriage but also directly proposed breaking up, with a firm attitude.

This was hard for him to accept, so he demanded the girlfriend return all the expenses spent during their relationship.

However, the girlfriend refused strongly, saying, "All these money were voluntarily given by you to me. Why should I give them back?" In her view, the expenses the man made for her and her family during their relationship were normal acts of maintaining their feelings, constituting voluntary gifts, and there was no reason to return them. The two sides fell into an impasse, and the man had no choice but to seek legal protection.

After the court accepted the case and conducted a detailed review, it believed that the gifts exchanged during the relationship could be divided into two categories: ordinary gifts and conditional gifts.

Among them, daily expenses and small, general gifts were considered normal contributions to maintaining their relationship and did not need to be returned; but for large, valuable items like the Porsche and the house, they should be recognized as conditional gifts, with the condition being that the couple would marry.

In the end, the court ruled: the girlfriend must return 6.71 million yuan in gifts to the man, and her parents must return 930k yuan for the house. Expenses for daily living and other costs during the relationship were not to be returned.
