Recently, I delved deeper into the history of one of the most influential people in the crypto world, and it’s worth sharing.
Vitalik Buterin is not just the founder of Ethereum—he is, in essence, the person who changed the entire blockchain landscape. Born in Russia but raised in Canada, he stood out from childhood for his mathematical abilities and his interest in technology. When he discovered Bitcoin in high school, he understood its limitations and began to think about something bigger.
This led him to the revolutionary idea of smart contracts. In 2013, he published the concept that later became Ethereum. The Crowdfunding 2014 campaign raised more than 18 million dollars, and the official launch in July 2015 was a turning point. The platform instantly attracted developers thanks to the ability to build decentralized applications.
But Ethereum’s story is not only about successes. In 2016, the DAO was attacked, and about 60 million dollars was stolen. This led to a split in the community and the creation of Ethereum Classic. Then came the scalability problem— the network slowed down as the number of users grew.
The solution came in September 2022 with The Merge—the transition from Proof of Work to Proof of Stake. Energy consumption fell by 99%. It was truly a significant step, and Buterin continues to focus on improving the platform, developing Web3, and increasing decentralization.
What’s interesting is that Buterin isn’t just a technical guru. He is an active philanthropist. During Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, he donated about 5 million dollars for humanitarian aid. By the end of October 2024, he had transferred 400 ETH to Ukrainian charitable organizations. He has also visited Ukraine multiple times, participated in conferences and hackathons, including ETHKyiv.
This shows that Buterin is more than just the architect of a platform. He is a principled person who sees blockchain as a tool for positive change. His impact on the development of the crypto industry is hard to overestimate, and his philanthropic work confirms that success in the crypto world can go hand in hand with humanitarian values.
If you’re interested in the development of Ethereum and its prospects, it’s worth keeping up with platform updates and the projects being built on its foundation. On Gate, you can track the ETH price and analyze market movements.
