Recently, I saw many newcomers in Discord confused by crypto slang, and I realized that these seemingly simple terms are indeed a barrier for newcomers. Instead of each person figuring it out on their own, it's better to clarify these common terms together—so you won't be left clueless when listening in the community.
Let's start with the most classic one—HODL. This word actually originated from a spelling mistake, but it has become a declaration of faith in the crypto world. Simply put, it means buying and holding long-term, regardless of market fluctuations. You'll see many people shouting HODL during market crashes—that's what it means. Like someone saying BTC dropped 15% but still saying "I'm holding," that’s the attitude of a true HODLer.
Next is FUD—Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt. This term describes exaggerated or manipulated negative news. Sometimes, rumors or bad news appear in the market, aiming to create panic and cause people to sell off. For example, a tweet from a celebrity triggering negative sentiment about a certain coin—that's classic FUD.
Conversely, WAGMI—"We’re All Going to Make It." This is pure crypto optimism, representing community solidarity and confidence in the future. During bull markets, new projects launching, or your holdings skyrocketing, people will shout WAGMI, and that atmosphere is truly contagious.
There are also some everyday terms that are very important. GM and GN mean Good Morning and Good Night. They seem simple, but in the crypto community, these greetings are more than politeness—they are ways to build a sense of community.
DYOR is also crucial—Do Your Own Research. Don’t blindly follow the crowd or jump in just because a big influencer on Twitter says a coin has potential. Always do your homework before buying; it’s the most basic way to protect yourself.
Finally, REKT—completely wrecked. When you buy at a high and sell at a low, you’re REKT. Some people even joke, "I bought a meme coin and got REKT," which, though playful, also highlights the risks of the market.
In fact, learning these slang terms is not just about fitting into the community, but more importantly, understanding the logic behind them. HODL teaches you to have faith, FUD reminds you to stay alert, WAGMI encourages you not to feel alone. Next time you chat in the community, you'll be able to keep up with the rhythm and better understand what others are saying. Most importantly, no matter how the market changes, remember the core of HODL—stick to your beliefs and make rational decisions.
