I just learned about Billy Markus, the person behind Dogecoin, and I have to say the story is quite interesting. He was born in 1983 in Portland, Oregon, initially working as a software engineer at IBM before deciding to do something crazier.
What made Billy Markus famous was that in late 2013, together with his friend Jackson Palmer, he created Dogecoin—a meme coin designed to mock serious crypto projects like Bitcoin and Litecoin. Unbelievably, what started as a joke turned into a global phenomenon.
Crypto forums call Billy Markus by the pseudonym Shibetoshi Nakamoto on Twitter/X. Perhaps because he doesn't want to be too famous, Billy Markus keeps a low profile regarding his personal life and career after Dogecoin. But on social media, he is quite active and has accumulated a significant number of followers.
The interesting thing about Billy Markus is that he doesn't see Dogecoin as a grand project but rather as a way to criticize the overly serious attitude of the crypto community at that time. Who would have thought that this "joke" could change the way people view meme cryptocurrencies.
