I just realized that Nancy Pelosi's wealth reportedly now reaches $271 million according to various reports.
Of course, that raises some uncomfortable questions, especially when you look at her stock trades.
When you examine it more closely, it quickly becomes clear why so many people are skeptical.
The timing of her trades, the profits – many things seem to fit together too well.
And this is not an isolated case.
Many members of Congress appear to be unusually successful with their investments.
Coincidence? Or simply better information than the rest of us?
Nancy Pelosi's wealth is actually a symptom of a bigger problem:
There is far too little transparency and far too few rules for politicians trading stocks.
Conflicts of interest are practically pre-programmed when someone writes laws and profits from them at the same time.
Many are now rightly calling for stricter controls and clearer guidelines.
Not out of envy, but because trust in politics simply cannot be maintained if such questions remain open.
Nancy Pelosi's wealth and similar cases show: without real transparency, nothing will change.
That should give us all pause.
