Brazil Central Bank Bans Use of Stablecoins and Cryptocurrencies for Cross-Border Payments

On May 3, the Brazil Central Bank prohibited the use of stablecoins and cryptocurrencies for settlement in cross-border payments, effective October 1. This ban applies to fintech companies and payment firms, closing off backend payment channels for cross-border capital flows; however, individual cryptocurrency investors can still buy and hold assets.
