I just realized recently that in many cases, you really need to use virtual numbers, such as registering for overseas websites, testing SMS interfaces, or conducting account verification experiments. Buying new SIM cards is too impractical, so SMS reception platforms have become my lifesaver. Basically, these platforms provide virtual phone numbers to receive SMS verification codes, charging per use or on a monthly basis, which can protect privacy and also be used for testing.

I've encountered quite a few pitfalls before, like not receiving SMS or delays of half a day. Later, I found a few decent SMS reception platforms, and after testing, the most stable ones are SMS-Activate and 5SIM. SMS-Activate usually delivers verification codes within 10 seconds, covers many countries, and is especially suitable for cross-border application testing. 5SIM's interface is also very user-friendly, with clear API documentation, and you can normally receive codes when registering for Google, Twitter, and other services.

If you're only testing domestic applications, Super Cloud SMS and XiaoNiao receive codes quite well. US numbers generally get codes in 10-30 seconds, Chinese numbers are even faster, with receipts within 5-20 seconds. Getsmscode is inexpensive and suitable for light usage. However, be aware that shared numbers are often previously registered, and verification codes for less popular platforms may be delayed. It's recommended to choose reputable platforms and prepare several backup numbers.

Overall, if it's just for API testing, any SMS reception platform supporting API is fine. But if you need stable registration for overseas websites, it's best to top up multiple numbers so you can switch immediately if one becomes invalid. Some platforms also support one-click number switching, which is really very practical.
