I noticed an interesting contrast in the Musk family. If Elon is conquering space and electric vehicles, then his brother Kimbal is taking a completely different path. Kimbal Musk is basically doing something entirely different—he’s fighting for food security and healthy eating through his organization Big Green. A guy in a cowboy hat who became a billionaire (his net worth is estimated at around $700 million, mainly thanks to Tesla shares), but chose a path that’s nothing like that of his older brother.

Recently, Kimbal talked about tariff policy on X—he criticized the approach that, in his opinion, creates structural taxes for the American consumer. It’s interesting that the brothers can have different views on economics and politics, yet remain close.

They have a lot in common since childhood: both were born in Pretoria, with similar facial features (a square jaw, a straight nose, green eyes), and both hold South African, Canadian, and American citizenship. But it’s Kimbal who stands out with his signature—an eternal cowboy hat that has become his calling card.

The Musk family story began with the fact that, together with his sister Tosca, they went through difficult times in childhood, which led to their parents’ divorce in the late 70s. Later, the family emigrated to Canada and the United States. And it was there that both brothers launched Zip2—an internet startup for business software. The project was sold in 1999 to Compaq for $307 million. That was their shared success, which set everything else in motion.

So Kimbal Musk is not just the brother of a billionaire, but a person in his own right with his own mission. And it seems that each of the brothers chose his own way to change the world.
