I just looked into what the weakest currency in the world actually is — pretty crazy how much some countries are struggling. The Iranian Rial tops the list, 1 Rial = 0.000024 USD. Sanctions, political instability, and massive inflation have practically collapsed the currency. But others are not much better off.

The Vietnamese Dong, Sierra Leone Leone, and Laotian Kip are also among the weakest. Vietnam experienced rapid growth, but declines in exports and investment hurdles have put pressure on the Dong. Sierra Leone is still dealing with the economic aftermath of the Ebola crisis. And in Laos, high inflation and foreign debt are weighing down the currency.

Even Indonesia, Southeast Asia’s largest economy, is struggling with its Rupiah. The same problems everywhere: high inflation, weak growth, external debt. The weakest currency is often a symptom of deeper economic issues. It’s interesting to see how much sanctions, political stability, and inflation influence currency strength.
