I've noticed that many newcomers in the crypto market often fall into the same trap. We're talking about a scheme known in the crypto community as pump-and-dump. Here's what a pump really is — it's when a group of scammers buys a coin cheaply, then creates hype through social media and forums, the price skyrockets, and then they dump everything, leaving regular investors with losses.
How does this work in reality? The classic scenario: criminals quietly accumulate large volumes of a certain cryptocurrency, then start creating excitement — posting in chats, tweeting, promising the moon. People believe it, start buying, demand increases, the price soars. When it reaches the peak — bam, the scheme organizers sell all their assets at the highest price and disappear. The rest are left with devalued assets.
How to recognize that a pump is happening? The first sign — the price suddenly jumps sharply without any apparent reason. No news, no updates, nothing justifies such growth. Just out of nowhere. The second sign — trading volume suddenly spikes along with the price increase. This almost always indicates manipulation. The third — posts from unknown accounts appear everywhere on social media, advising to buy urgently, claiming it's the last chance.
What should you do to avoid falling for it? First, always check the project before investing. Look at the team, the roadmap, whether the project has a real purpose. Legitimate projects are transparent and willing to share information. Second, be skeptical of promises of quick riches. If they advise buying urgently to not miss a magical opportunity — that's almost a guaranteed sign of manipulation.
Diversification is your friend. Don't put all your money into one coin, especially if you see signs of manipulation. Spread your portfolio across different assets. And also — trade on reputable exchanges. Authoritative platforms have systems to detect fraudulent activity and usually provide a safer environment.
Keep an eye on news in the crypto world. Being informed is your best protection. Understand how the market is regulated in your country. Regulators are increasingly fighting fraud, and this works in favor of honest investors.
In general, pump-and-dump is a real threat, but if you stay attentive and don't chase quick money, you can trade and invest calmly. The main thing — learn to recognize red flags and make informed decisions.
