I’ve noticed that over the past few years, quite a few interesting films about cryptocurrency and blockchain have appeared. Back then, it was something exotic, but now directors and documentary makers are taking this topic seriously. I decided to put together a list of what’s genuinely worth watching if you want to better understand this world—or if you just want a good movie for the evening.
I’ll start with a documentary. **Trust Machine** by **Alex Winter** (2018) is a deep dive into how blockchain can overturn different industries. It’s not just about cryptocurrency, but about the broader possibilities of the technology. If you’re at the beginning of your journey, **Banking on Bitcoin** will give you a solid foundation—the story of Bitcoin, its pioneers, regulatory obstacles—all in one film.
There are also more specific documentary works. **The Rise and Rise of Bitcoin** shows the path through the eyes of those who believed in it from the very start—miners, early investors, and those who took risks when no one else believed. **The Bitcoin Gospel** goes deeper into philosophy—why people see Bitcoin as a tool of freedom, and what ideas drive the community. **Crypto Race** is interesting because it examines the growth of women in the crypto space and the impact of blockchain on different sectors around the world.
**Bitcoin: Beyond the Bubble** asks the key question: is it a speculative bubble or the future of money? It’s a good cryptocurrency film for people who like to look at things critically. **Nobody to Trust** about the story of **QuadrigaCX**—this is a crypto mystery that truly shook the industry. **250 million** in closed funds, the mysterious death of the CEO. Netflix made a documentary that’s both gripping and frightening.
If you want fiction, then **Crypto** (2019) is a crime drama about a banker who uncovers a conspiracy involving money laundering and organized crime. A tense plot, great characters. **Vietnam Bitcoin Heist** is a fun action comedy where thieves hunt a cybercriminal—something like **Ocean’s 11**, but in the crypto world.
The TV series **StartUp** is also worth watching—it’s about creating the digital currency **GenCoin** and all the obstacles that stand in the way of the developers. It blends a technology thriller with a crime drama. **Decrypted** is a satire about a secret team trying to find **Satoshi Nakamoto** and get him to reveal secrets. A black comedy that manages to be both funny and intriguing at the same time.
**Open Money** is a docuseries about the company **Dragonchain**, which fights regulatory challenges. It shows the real difficulties in the blockchain industry, but also opportunities for growth.
In general, watching these movies about cryptocurrency, you realize that the industry has come a long way—from criminal thrillers to serious documentary research. There’s something for everyone—whether you want education, entertainment, or just a good film.
Which one should you watch first? If you’re a beginner, start with the documentary about Bitcoin’s history. If you love intrigue, **Nobody to Trust** is genuinely captivating. If you want an easy evening, **Vietnam Bitcoin Heist** or **Decrypted**. Which of these do you like more—or maybe you know something else interesting about cryptocurrency? Share it in the comments.
