African Union (AU) Commission Chairperson Youssef recently said in South Africa that South Africa is an important member of the Group of Twenty (G20), and that any G20 summit without South Africa would be “utterly meaningless.” Regarding South Africa not being invited to this year’s G20 summit to be held in Miami, United States, Youssef expressed condemnation and opposition. Youssef emphasized that the G20 platform is not exclusive to any country, and that its inclusiveness is crucial. The AU’s position is very clear: it hopes to see South Africa attend this year’s G20 summit. Since 2025, relations between the United States and South Africa have remained tense. The U.S. cut off its assistance to South Africa, citing the South African government’s land policies as amounting to racial discrimination against the country’s white population, later expelled the South African ambassador, and did not attend the G20 summit held in South Africa in November 2025.
