Recently, I discovered something super useful: SMS receiving platforms. Many times, you temporarily need a verification code but don’t want to use a real phone number, and that’s exactly where these platforms come in. I’ve also stepped into quite a few traps before—some platforms simply can’t receive text messages, while others have delays that are outrageous. Later on, I gradually found a few SMS receiving platforms that are decent, so I’ll share them.
To put it simply, SMS receiving platforms provide virtual numbers to receive verification codes. They charge either per use or with monthly plans. They help protect privacy and make testing more convenient. The ones I commonly use are SMS-Activate, 5SIM, and Super Cloud SMS. SMS-Activate covers the most countries; verification codes basically arrive within 10 seconds, making it especially suitable for cross-border applications. Super Cloud SMS’s U.S. number ranges reply in 10–30 seconds; its China number ranges are even faster—there are receipts within 5–20 seconds. However, during peak times, it may occasionally be a bit slower. 5SIM has a user-friendly interface, and its API documentation is clear. Google and Twitter can receive codes normally as well.
If you mainly use domestic apps, Bird SMS and Getsmscode are also okay. You can generally see the verification codes within 5–15 seconds, and the prices are cheap. However, when using SMS receiving platforms, there are a few things to keep in mind: some numbers are shared, which makes them easier to get flagged as risky numbers; verification codes may be delayed, especially for less popular applications. It’s best to prepare several numbers in advance as backups, so you can switch immediately if one becomes invalid.
Based on my experience, if you’re only testing interfaces, any API-supported number is enough. But if you want stable registration on overseas websites, it’s safer to load a few more numbers. Some platforms support one-click number switching, and that feature is especially useful. According to my experience, SMS-Activate and 5SIM perform the most reliably overall, with low latency and broad coverage—so they’re my top picks among SMS receiving platforms.
