I just read about the sentencing of Konstantin Ignatov, and honestly, the OneCoin case still shocks me. Judge Edgardo Ramos released him from prison on March 5th, even though he was sentenced to 34 months. Why? Because Konstantin Ignatov had already spent enough time behind bars before the entire trial. It turned out he served as long as his sentence was.
Konstantin Ignatov is the brother of the famous Cryptoqueen Ruja Ignatova, who disappeared in 2017. While she was working on the massive scam OneCoin – we're talking about $4 billion – Konstantin was working as her assistant. Then, after his sister vanished, he took control of the entire operation and became the "de facto leader" of the program, according to prosecutors.
The most interesting thing is that during the trial, Konstantin admitted to lying in his testimony. He said he lied about throwing away a laptop in Las Vegas. The judge ruled that this was a minor issue and did not affect the jury's verdict, so he did not overturn the sentence. Others also received sentences – Mark Scott, a former OneCoin lawyer, was sentenced to 10 years for laundering $400 million. Karl Greenwood, a co-founder, received 20 years.
Meanwhile, Ruja Ignatova is still at large since 2017, even though she is on the FBI's ten most wanted list. There are theories that she might have been killed by a drug lord in 2018, but that's just rumors. It's strange that Konstantin Ignatov is released, while his sister remains a mystery. Does anyone know more about this?
