I just realized that there are quite a few people in the crypto community who don't really understand what hopium means. Actually, it's a pretty clever slang term, combining 'hope' and 'opium', used to mock people's baseless hopes.
What does hopium mean in the context of cryptocurrency? Basically, it describes investors obsessed with a coin, believing it will 'moon' even though the project is already dead. Like, my friends hold a useless coin but keep saying 'next year it’ll 100x', that’s hopium.
The interesting part is that hopium is closely related to 'copium'. But they are not exactly the same. Copium is a coping mechanism to deal with negative situations, while hopium is an irrational hope with no basis at all. One is a way to deceive yourself into feeling better, the other is believing in something impossible.
So why is hopium considered so negative? Because it’s used to mock those stuck in illusions. I often see in chat groups, when someone is overly optimistic about a weak project, people comment 'Hopium' or 'Need more hopium here'. It’s a gentle way for the community to tease reckless investment decisions.
But the interesting thing is that what hopium is also reflects part of the investment psychology. Everyone has had unrealistic hopes about some coin at some point. Hopium just helps people realize that in a humorous way. That’s why this term is popular in the crypto community — it’s both a warning and a joke that everyone understands.
