I was just thinking about something that many of us overlook in the markets: the concept of the black swan, its meaning, and why it's so important to understand it right now.

It all started when Nassim Nicholas Taleb wrote his famous book on this subject. Basically, he proposed that there are extremely rare and unpredictable events that no one sees coming, but when they happen, they change everything. The interesting part is that after they occur, everyone says "it should have been obvious," but the reality is that our traditional statistical models cannot capture them because they have never happened before.

Taleb makes a crucial point: we believe that because something was safe in the past, the future will be the same. But that is a huge logical mistake. He insists that when we face the unknown, we tend to build comforting stories to feel in control, when in reality, most changes in the real world are neither linear nor predictable.

Now, why is it called that? Here comes the interesting part. In ancient times, Europeans were convinced that all swans were white, so they said black swans did not exist, they were impossible. But when they discovered real black swans in Australia, all that theory collapsed. It was an event that simply invalidated centuries of assumptions.

The word itself is brilliant from the perspective of the black swan meaning because the image is so powerful that you immediately think of something rare, unexpected, and shocking. That’s why the term stuck so well.

In crypto markets, these events happen more often than we would like to admit. Unexpected collapses, surprising regulations, innovations no one predicted. The key is to recognize that black swans will always be out there, and the best we can do is not to be overly confident in our predictions.
