Techub News reports that the U.S. Treasury Department recently seized nearly $500 million in cryptocurrency assets related to Iran as part of “Operation Economic Fury.” The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the U.S. Treasury has sanctioned multiple cryptocurrency wallets, including freezing $344 million worth of USDT. The move aims to weaken Iran’s economic capabilities and aligns with the Trump administration’s “maximum pressure” strategy against Iran. USDT is a dollar-pegged stablecoin issued by Tether and is one of the most widely circulated stablecoins in the cryptocurrency market, commonly used for trading and cross-border transfers. This asset freeze marks a significant escalation in the U.S. government’s regulation of cryptocurrency assets and also reflects that, amid geopolitical tensions, regulators are intensifying efforts to crack down on crypto assets linked to sanctioned countries.
