Grok Launches Voice Cloning: Record One Minute to Create Your Own AI Voice

According to monitoring by Beating, xAI has launched Grok Custom Voices and Voice Library. Users can record a segment of their voice in the xAI console to generate their own voice_id, which can then be integrated with Grok TTS or Voice Agent API for applications such as customer service agents, content creation, game characters, and audiobook narration. This functionality is not simply about uploading audio for cloning. Users must read and verify short phrases, with the system performing real-time transcription using STT and comparing the speaker characteristics of the verification recording with the complete recording to confirm they are the same person before generating the voice. xAI states that this prevents the cloning of others’ voices using pre-existing recordings. Currently, Custom Voices are only available in the United States, excluding Illinois. The console allows for the free creation of up to 30 custom voices, while API creation capabilities are only available to Enterprise teams. There is no additional charge for the custom voices themselves, but usage of the voice API is billed per usage: Realtime at $3.00/hour and Text to Speech at $4.20 per million characters.
