Lately I've been messing around with virtual numbers again, honestly I've stepped into quite a few pits. Sometimes you just need to use a number temporarily, like for testing APIs or registering on overseas websites. Buying new SIM cards is too troublesome, so receiving number platforms have become a must-have.
I've tried several before, some platforms simply don't receive texts at all, others are so slow you doubt life. Later I realized that choosing the right platform is really key. I've compiled five personally tested usable ones to share with everyone.
SMS-Activate is the most smooth one I’ve used; virtual numbers receive messages incredibly fast, basically within 10 seconds. It also covers many countries, making it especially suitable for cross-border testing. Super Cloud SMS is well optimized for Chinese number segments, stable for US segments too, though sometimes it gets stuck during peak hours. 5SIM has a user-friendly interface, clear API documentation, and can verify Google and Twitter normally.
XiaoNiao receives codes in about 5 to 15 seconds, which is quite cost-effective for testing domestic applications. Getsmscode is cheap, suitable for light users, but may have delays on less popular platforms.
Honestly, the most annoying thing about virtual numbers is that shared number segments are easily flagged for risk control, so my experience is to prepare several numbers and switch immediately if one doesn’t work. Some platforms support one-click number switching, which is really lifesaving. Also, choose reputable platforms—don’t risk using shady services just to save a few bucks.
If you're just testing APIs, any platform that supports API is enough. But if you want stable registration on overseas websites, you need to put in a bit more effort. If you encounter issues like not receiving texts, try switching to a different country number or refresh. Based on my experience, SMS-Activate and 5SIM perform the most stable overall—low latency, wide coverage, definitely worth trying.
