Spirit Airlines halted all operations early on May 2, 2026, ending 34 years of service after fuel costs surged during the U.S.-Iran War. Spirit said the war added $10 million to $15 million a week to costs as supply disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz pushed jet fuel prices to roughly double. The carrier had already filed for Chapter 11 twice and was preparing for Chapter 7 liquidation.
