Trump informs the U.S. Congress that the conflict with Iran has ended
Mr. Trump has informed Congress that the fighting between the U.S. and Iran ended in April, thereby seeking to avoid a military approval request from Congress. The 60-day deadline under his 1973 War Powers Act expired on May 1st.
In a letter to Congress, Mr. Trump argued that the U.S. had ceased military operations against Iran since April 7th, when the two sides reached a ceasefire agreement that was subsequently extended. He also wrote that since April 7th, 2026, there have been no further exchanges of fire between U.S. and Iranian forces.
According to this interpretation, if hostilities resume, the 60-day period would be reset from the beginning. However, the White House’s reasoning is likely to face opposition from Democratic senators.
This move comes as the U.S. government seeks to assert that recent military actions are no longer within the scope of the ongoing conflict. It is currently unclear how Congress will respond to the timeline calculation presented by Mr. Trump in his letter.
