I recently came across an interesting post by Kimball Musk on X, in which he criticizes Trump’s tariff policy. It’s amusing that the brother of Tesla’s head condemns decisions that his more famous brother clearly supports. Kimball Musk clearly disagrees with the way the president shifts the tax burden onto American consumers through structural tariffs. That’s a rather bold position, especially considering the Musk family usually sticks together.

Kimball himself is an interesting figure, though less well-known than Elon. His net worth is about 700 million dollars, mainly thanks to shares in Tesla. But unlike his brother, who is occupied with space projects and electric vehicles, Kimball focuses on charity and food security. He’s recognized primarily by his signature cowboy hat, which has become almost his calling card.

The brothers have a striking physical resemblance—both were born in Pretoria; they have the same square jaw, a straight nose, and green eyes. Kimball Musk and Elon even share an unusual combination of citizenships: South African, Canadian, and American. Together with their younger sister Tosca, they endured a difficult childhood marked by domestic violence, which forced their mother, Maya, to divorce in the late 1970s. After that, the family moved to Canada and then to the United States.

It was in America that both brothers launched Zip2, a startup for business software on the internet. The project proved successful: in 1999, they sold it to Compaq for 307 million dollars. This was their first major breakthrough, opening the door to their next ventures. Interestingly, despite their different views on politics and economics, the brothers remain close. Kimball Musk seems not to be afraid to express his opinion—even if it contradicts Elon’s position.
