I looked at the per capita GDP figures for 2025 and it's quite striking. The poorest countries are really concentrated in Africa and South Asia. South Sudan ranks first with only $251 per person, which is barely believable. Just after, Yemen at $417 and Burundi at $490.

What strikes me is that out of the 50 economically poorest countries, the majority are African. DRC, Niger, Somalia, Nigeria, all below $1,000. Even countries like Myanmar or Nepal in Asia are in the same boat with around $1,200-$1,500 per capita.

And then you have huge disparities. India, despite its massive population, is at $2,878. Haiti at $2,672. This really shows the economic development inequalities around the world. The poorest countries unfortunately remain those facing humanitarian crises and conflicts.
