Breaking records! The deepest vertical shaft of our country's pumped storage power station is fully connected
Today (the 2nd), a key energy project in the country’s “14th Five-Year Plan” — the Zhejiang Songyang Pumped Storage Power Station — achieved full connection of its two deep vertical shafts, each reaching a depth of 637 meters, setting a new record for the deepest vertical shaft engineering in China’s pumped storage sector.
The Songyang Pumped Storage Power Station is located in Songyang County, Lishui City, Zhejiang Province, and is designed and installed with 4 reversible hydro turbine-generator units, each with a rated capacity of 350,000 kilowatts. The vertical shafts that have been fully connected are the core channels for energy conversion at the power station; with a depth of 637 meters, they are equivalent to embedding the height of more than 200 floors of a building vertically into the mountains, setting the top record among similar projects in China’s pumped storage sector.
When constructing in ultra-deep, complex geological formations, the project faces a series of technical challenges, including fault zones, water inflow, ventilation, and muck removal; meanwhile, traditional methods have a number of issues such as lower construction efficiency and greater difficulty in safety management.
