European Commission spokesperson: The EU will keep all options on the table to protect its interests
In response to U.S. President Trump’s threat to increase tariffs on EU exports of automobiles, a European Commission spokesperson stated on the 1st: “If the United States takes measures inconsistent with the trade agreements between Europe and the United States, we will reserve all options to defend the interests of the European Union.” The spokesperson said that the EU is always committed to establishing a predictable and reciprocal transatlantic relationship. The EU is implementing the commitments in the agreement according to standard legislative procedures and has been continuously informing the U.S. side throughout the process, maintaining close communication. Earlier that day, Trump posted on social media that because the EU did not comply with the bilateral trade agreement with the United States, the U.S. will raise tariffs on EU exports of automobiles to 25% next week.
