No more room! Iran exhausts all efforts to transport oil to China by rail, Trump’s blockade fails
By the end of April 2026, Iran faced an oil export crisis, affected by U.S. maritime military blockade, with global oil tankers avoiding the area, and transportation through the Strait of Hormuz hindered. Iran’s crude oil reserves were overflowing, land-based oil depots exhausted, abandoned oil tanks restarted, and super-large oil tankers became drifting warehouses at sea, while oil fields could not be shut down at will, leading to continuous crude oil backlog, and Iran fell into a desperate situation.
To break the blockade, Iran chose to rely on the China-Iran transnational railway oil transport, which was connected in May 2025. The route starts from Xi'an and Yiwu in China, passes through Alashankou in Xinjiang, crosses Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan, and reaches Tehran, taking more than ten days, much faster than the thirty to forty days of sea transport, and can also completely avoid U.S. military maritime blockade.
Previously, this route transported oil twice a week. After U.S. sanctions intensified, China and Iran urgently increased the train frequency to four or five trips per week. The railway container trains can carry only two to three thousand tons per trip, far less than sea shipping, but under geopolitical blockade, it is the safest transportation route. Even if it operates at a loss, Iran must defend this lifeline to ensure the operation of the national economy and people's livelihoods.
Aircraft carriers can blockade the sea, but cannot block underground railways. China upholds the principle of peaceful coexistence and mutual benefit, deepening cooperation with Iran to ensure smooth energy transportation channels, becoming a ballast stone for global energy supply and demand stability, and exposing the double standards of Western countries.
Although railway capacity cannot fully fill Iran’s huge oil export gap and cannot completely replace sea shipping, this land route, free from external control, allows Iran to hold on to hope in desperation, and has become a successful practice of China securing energy safety through multiple channels. U.S. blockade plans have been completely thwarted.
