US Media: Iran Eases Conditions for Restoring Talks with the United States

On May 2, Iran submitted to Washington a new proposal intended to end the war, showing signs of compromise, with the aim of restarting negotiations to resolve a stalemate that is imposing heavy costs on its economy. Insiders said that Iran’s new proposal brings it one step closer to the United States: it proposes placing Tehran’s conditions regarding opening the Strait of Hormuz alongside two other issues—U.S. commitments to stop attacks and to lift the blockade on Iranian ports—for discussion at the same time. Previously, Iran had demanded that the U.S. lift the blockade as a prerequisite to kick off negotiations, and it required the U.S. side to first reach agreement on the terms to end the war before discussing matters related to the future management of the strait and nuclear plans. Insiders also said that the new proposal then proposed discussing issues related to Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for the U.S. side implementing sanctions relief. Iran has told mediators that if Washington is receptive to this new proposal, Iran is prepared to travel to Pakistan to hold talks in the early part of next week. (The Wall Street Journal)
