I just looked at an interesting overview of who owns the most Bitcoins. The result is quite fascinating and shows how concentrated the BTC holdings really are.
At the top is, of course, Satoshi Nakamoto with an estimated 1.1 million BTC. These coins have never been moved since the early days – which repeatedly leads to wild speculation about his identity and what he plans to do with them.
Following are major financial players. Some of the largest exchanges hold massive holdings – over 550,000 BTC at one of the world's largest platforms, then another major US exchange with about 294,000 BTC. These amounts demonstrate how important these platforms are to the global crypto infrastructure.
But traditional financial companies are also heavily represented. BlackRock holds over 300,000 BTC, Grayscale over 260,000 BTC, Fidelity over 181,000 BTC. That’s impressive – these large asset managers have truly accepted Bitcoin as an asset class.
It’s also interesting that governments hold significant holdings. The USA has over 213,000 BTC, mainly from seizures. China holds about 190,000 BTC, despite the official ban. MicroStrategy and Block.one round out the top list with over 160,000 BTC each.
When you look at who owns the most Bitcoins, it becomes clear: it’s a mix of mysterious early miners, financial institutions, and even government actors. The concentration is real, but it’s more distributed than many think.
