Just checked the latest cost of living rankings and honestly, if you're thinking about moving to the world's most expensive place to live, Switzerland basically owns the entire top tier. Zurich, Geneva, and Basel are sitting at 112.5, 111.4, and 110.7 on the index respectively—all crushing it in terms of being the most expensive cities globally. New York's the baseline at 100, so these Swiss cities are all running 10-12% higher. Pretty wild.
What's interesting is how dominated the most expensive place rankings are by Switzerland. Six out of the top six spots are Swiss cities. Like, we're talking Zurich, Geneva, Basel, Lausanne, Lugano, and Bern all packed into the premium tier. The US has some heavy hitters too—New York obviously, but also San Francisco, Seattle, and Boston pushing up there because of tech industry demand. Even laid-back sounding cities like Honolulu are hitting 94.4 on the index.
If we're talking about the world's most expensive place to actually live though, you're looking at Switzerland hands down. Average salaries in Zurich hit CHF 7,000-9,000 monthly, which helps offset the crazy housing and food costs. Norway's got a bunch of expensive cities in the mix too, and Singapore's the main Asian representative on the list. Honestly, Europe just dominates when it comes to high cost of living cities. The gap between these places and everywhere else is pretty substantial.
