I have always been fascinated by asking myself what was the largest empire in history. When you do a little research, you discover that the answer is not as simple as it seems.
The British Empire takes the top spot with 35.5 million km², making it the largest empire that has ever existed. But here’s where it gets interesting: at its peak, the Mongol Empire reached 24 million km², an impressive figure considering it was mainly built through military conquests in just over a century.
If we talk about older empires, the Russian Empire with 22.8 million km² also deserves attention. And then there are Asian empires like the Qing Dynasty with 14.7 million km² and the Yuan Dynasty with 11 million km², demonstrating that territorial dominance was not exclusive to the West.
What’s fascinating is seeing how the concept of the largest empire has changed over time. In ancient times, the Roman Empire controlled just 5 million km², but its influence was monumental. Arab caliphates like the Umayyad and Abbasid reached 11 million km² each, expanding their power from the Atlantic to Central Asia.
In more recent times, we have cases like the Japanese Empire during World War II with 8.5 million km², or Nazi expansionism under Hitler, which reached 4.8 million km² in 1942.
But if you really want to understand which was the largest empire in history, you have to consider not only the maximum territory but also the duration and influence. The British may hold the record for extent, but the Mongol achieved something similar in much less time. Each tells a different story about power, conquest, and the fall of civilizations.
