Lately, I’ve often needed to register overseas websites for testing, and that’s when I realized just how convenient virtual-number SMS receiving is. Instead of buying a brand-new SIM card every time, using an sms receiving (SMS verification) platform is faster. But these platforms have plenty of traps too—I’ve stepped on several myself. Sometimes you don’t receive the SMS at all, and sometimes it’s ridiculously slow. Later, I found a few that are pretty good.

The easiest to use are SMS-Activate and 5SIM. Both are quite stable: verification codes usually arrive within 10 seconds, and they have broad country coverage. If you’re only testing within the country, Super Cloud SMS and XiaoNiao Verification offer good value—Chinese number prefixes are fast, and you can get receipts in 5 to 20 seconds. Getsmscode is cheaper, but it’s mainly suitable for common use cases.

When using sms receiving, there are a few pitfalls to avoid: many of the numbers are shared, which makes them more likely to trigger risk controls; SMS codes from less popular platforms may be delayed; it’s best to top up multiple numbers at once—if one becomes invalid, you can switch immediately. Another small tip is to choose platforms that support an API, which makes batch processing more convenient. Overall, SMS-Activate and 5SIM deliver the most reliable results. If you only need it temporarily, any sms receiving platform is generally enough, but you should choose ones with good reputations—don’t just buy cheap ones at random.
