Recently, I needed to register some overseas accounts, and using virtual numbers to receive codes became a quick and easy solution. I’ve definitely run into issues before—some platforms don’t receive texts at all, others have delays of half a day, but I eventually found a few decent SMS receiving services.

Basically, SMS receiving is renting virtual phone numbers to receive verification codes, covering various countries and regions. No need to buy new SIM cards, pay per use or monthly, which protects privacy and makes testing convenient. Among the platforms I’ve used, SMS-Activate responds the fastest, usually within 10 seconds, and has full country coverage. Super Cloud SMS is optimized well for domestic apps, with US numbers taking about 10-30 seconds, Chinese numbers even faster at 5-20 seconds, though sometimes slow during peak times. 5SIM has a user-friendly interface, clear API documentation, and can normally receive codes for Google and Twitter. Xiaoniao SMS is tailored for domestic apps, with common e-commerce and social platforms receiving codes in 5-15 seconds, offering good value. Getsmscode is cheap, suitable for light use, but may have delays on less popular platforms.

A few tips when using SMS receiving platforms: some numbers are shared and may have been used for registration before; verification codes might be delayed, especially in less common countries; it’s best to choose reputable, active platforms—not just the cheapest. Also, it’s advisable to prepare multiple numbers so that if one becomes invalid, you can switch immediately. Some platforms support one-click number switching, which is very convenient.

Honestly, if you’re just testing APIs, any platform supporting API access will do; but for stable registration on overseas websites, it’s better to top up multiple accounts to improve success rates. Also, a reminder: SMS receiving is mainly for protecting privacy and preventing spam; don’t use it for illegal activities.
