I just looked at a list of the richest athletes in the world and I have to say, the numbers are crazy. Michael Jordan leads with $3.6 billion — the guy still earns a lot through Nike deals. Then come Vince McMahon and Ion Tiriac, but after that, it gets interesting: Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi are also on the list of the richest athletes in the world with over a billion and 850 million, respectively.

What surprised me: LeBron, Magic Johnson, and The Rock all at $800 million. Tiger Woods as well. Federer, Hamilton, Beckham — they’ve all built substantial wealth. Floyd Mayweather with $400 million is also impressive for a boxer.

The complete ranking of the richest athletes in the world goes down to position 40, where names like Grant Hill and Kimi Räikkönen appear. Important to know: some are no longer alive, and all figures are estimates. But overall, it shows that the top athletes in the world don’t just earn during their careers — the deals afterward often make up the larger part. Who would have thought that so many of the richest athletes in the world come from the USA?
