In 1925, a photo of Zhang Suzhen (24), the female bandit chieftain from Northeast China (nicknamed “Tuo Dragon”), at the execution site. Kidnapped as a child, she rose from a wayward woman to become the leader of the “Righteous Army”; at her height, she commanded more than 2,000 people.
