The Japanese woman Kokuha Rei, who claims to be from 2058, has spoken again, and recently she has stirred up no small amount of commotion across social media. When it comes to her track record, she says she predicted things like the number of gold medals at the Tokyo Olympics, the Nikkei index’s plunge, and Shinzo Abe stepping down—no wonder so many people treat her as a sort of divine figure.
But this time, Kokuha Rei’s prediction focus shifted to cryptocurrencies. She claims that she once used her father’s account to buy in large quantities more than 1,400 ETH at the end of 2019, and then buried them at home, waiting to dig them up in 2058. Why choose Ethereum instead of Bitcoin? Her explanation is that the Ethereum ecosystem would provide more application space and has greater long-term potential. That logic is actually pretty sound.
Interestingly, Kokuha Rei also mentioned Bitcoin’s future direction. She said that in the future, Bitcoin would rise to 780 million yen (about 4.94 million US dollars), but by then, “you can only sell, not buy.” The moment she said that, her supporters were thrilled, believing there is still room to profit from buying Bitcoin now. But looking at the market now, BTC is already hovering around $77K and ETH is at $2.28K—this rally is indeed not small.
When you look back at her earlier so-called “uncannily accurate” predictions, though, if you think them through carefully, there are also some ambiguities. Things like an economic slowdown and political changes are, in the first place, easy to guess; add a bit of luck and some adjustments made after the fact, and they end up becoming “hits.” The scientific community remains very skeptical about time travel—some even point out that her wording contains lots of suggestive ambiguity, mainly to grab attention.
Kokuha Rei’s predictions do make investors re-examine the long-term potential of cryptocurrencies, but the risks should not be underestimated either. If you really want to follow her claims about the 2030s, first you need to assess how much risk you can actually tolerate. In the past two years, Bitcoin and Ethereum have been seeing big swings due to positive developments like the US election and the listing of ETFs. Even amid all these hot topics, investors still need to stay rational—don’t blindly chase price spikes.
Put plainly, whether Kokuha Rei’s “person from the future” identity is real or fake is hard to tell—but Kokuha Rei’s predictions have certainly sparked discussion in the market. For some people, it’s just entertaining media hype; for her believers, she’s like a prophet. No matter whether you believe it or not, in the end, investing comes down to your own judgment and risk management—step by step, one foot in front of the other.
