My eldest aunt never married and has no children.
Some time ago, she fell seriously ill and called me from the hospital to ask me to take care of her for a few days.
When I arrived at the hospital, my eldest aunt said to me: "I'll give you 200 yuan a day, and you take care of me until I leave the hospital."
I hurriedly said: "Aunt, what are you talking about? We are family, no need to talk about money."
I took care of my aunt in the hospital for 15 days. On the day she was discharged, she insisted on giving me 3,000 yuan.
I repeatedly declined, but my aunt said: "You need money for the caregiver too, better to give it to family."
She also told me not to feel embarrassed, that I had worked hard, and that I deserved it.
I had no choice but to accept it and took my aunt back to my home.
I remember my aunt was a true fighter when she was young, she started her own company and built her career.
When I was in college, I liked to stay at my aunt’s house on weekends.
After graduation, I still lived with her. She always told me: "We are family, no need to be strangers."
I don’t know why my aunt never married. She always lived alone, only joining us during holidays.
My parents once advised her to find a partner, but my aunt always smiled and shook her head: "I’m doing just fine by myself."
She also often joked that she considered me her daughter.
My aunt has always been very good to me, whether I was young or later working, I spent more time with her than with my parents.
Time flew by, I got married and had children, and moved out of my aunt’s house.
I remember the day I left, tears sparkled in my aunt’s eyes. I comforted her: "Aunt, I will visit you often."
But busy with work and my own family, I gradually neglected my aunt.
Until one day, my aunt called to tell me she was in the hospital, and I dropped everything to go take care of her.
In the hospital, my aunt was no longer the glamorous, strong woman she once was.
When I arrived at the hospital, my aunt said: "Thank you for taking care of me these days, I give you 200 yuan a day, so you don’t work for nothing."
I quickly refused: "Aunt, don’t say that. Taking care of you is what I should do."
On the day she was discharged, my aunt gave me 3,000 yuan, saying it was a little token of her appreciation.
I brought her home and took good care of her.
A few months later, my aunt recovered quite well and insisted on returning to her own home.
I couldn’t persuade her, so I had to let her go.
After my aunt left, I was tidying up the room and found 20,000 yuan under the pillow.
I thought she had dropped it and hurriedly called her.
But she said: "This is for you. I’ve been worried about you these months, and it’s affected your work. You should keep it."
When I heard that, I couldn’t help but cry.
My aunt has always taken care of me like this—how could I accept her money?
I tried to return it to her, but she insisted on not taking it, saying: "You’ve worked hard, you deserve to be rewarded."
That’s life. I have no children, and you are like my daughter.
