Day 4 of OpenAI Case: Musk Acknowledges xAI Distilled OpenAI Models
According to monitoring by Dongcha Beating, the fourth day of the court hearing in the Musk vs. OpenAI case saw xAI becoming the main focus. OpenAI’s lawyers questioned Musk about whether xAI had distilled OpenAI’s technology. Musk initially stated, “Almost all AI companies do this,” but after being pressed for a clear answer, he admitted, “Partially.” The Verge reported that this effectively confirms that xAI has used OpenAI models to improve its own models. Distillation involves using one AI model to train another model. While it is a common training method, if a competitor uses it to low-cost replicate the capabilities of a strong model, it could lead to disputes over copyright, terms, and commercial competition.
