The U.S. Senate rejects restrictions on Trump's war powers against Iran; 60-day war authorization deadline approaches

BlockBeats News, May 1st, the U.S. Senate rejected the sixth attempt by Democrats to limit President Trump’s power to wage war against Iran. As this conflict approaches the critical 60-day deadline, Republicans continue to firmly stand with the Trump administration.

On Thursday, a procedural vote on a war powers resolution proposed by California Democratic Senator Adam Schiff was rejected with 47 votes in favor and 50 votes against. The resolution would have directed the president to withdraw U.S. troops from hostilities with Iran.

The War Powers Resolution of 1973 stipulates that if Congress does not authorize the war, the president must withdraw armed forces after 60 days. This 60-day period begins from the date the president formally notifies Congress. President Trump notified Congress of hostilities with Iran on March 2, meaning the 60-day deadline will end on Friday, May 1. The president can extend the deadline by 30 days to withdraw troops.
