just realized there's actually a bunch of ways retirees can lose their Social Security benefits that nobody really talks about. like obviously if you end up in prison for over a month, that's it - benefits stop. but there's other stuff too that caught me off guard.

so apparently if the Social Security Administration asks you for documents and you just ignore them, they can hold your benefits until you respond. also if you've been giving them false info to get benefits, they'll shut you down completely. fraud obviously disqualifies you.

the divorce one is interesting though. if you're a retiree who claimed spousal benefits based on your ex's work record, divorce changes things depending on your age. under 62 and you lose them immediately unless the marriage lasted 10+ years. if you're already 62 or older and the marriage was 10+ years, you can usually keep getting spousal benefits even after divorce.

basically the takeaway is don't ignore SSA requests and don't commit fraud lol. seems obvious but apparently people don't always realize how fragile these benefits can be once you're actually collecting them. anyone else have experience with this stuff?
