Just stumbled on some interesting data about the cheapest places to live in the world, and honestly it's pretty eye-opening. Turns out if you're serious about finding affordable cities, you need to look way beyond the usual suspects.
So apparently India is absolutely dominating the list right now. Cities like Pune, Delhi, Bangalore, and Hyderabad are showing cost-of-living indexes in the low-to-mid 20s, which is wild compared to the US. We're talking rent that's basically a fraction of what you'd pay in major American cities. Kolkata and Chennai are even cheaper. Even Ahmedabad is ridiculously affordable. If you're looking for some of the cheapest places to live on the planet, India keeps showing up.
Beyond India, there's some other solid options. Wuhan and Chengdu in China are pretty budget-friendly, Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia is reasonable, and then you've got Cape Town and Johannesburg in South Africa offering decent value too. Karachi and Lahore in Pakistan are surprisingly affordable as well.
The wild part is how these most affordable cities compare to US averages. We're talking 60-70% cheaper overall in many of these spots. Rent especially is just on another level. If you're actually considering a move to find more budget-friendly destinations, the data from early 2024 shows these regions are where people are stretching their money the furthest. Whether it's groceries, rent, or just general cost of living, these cheapest places to live in the world are making a lot of digital nomads and remote workers take notice.
