PPG Industries just announced something interesting in the manufacturing space. They've teamed up with IPG Photonics and Whirlpool to push forward with laser curing technology for powder coatings. If you're not deep in industrial manufacturing, here's why this matters: they're essentially using infrared light to speed up the curing process dramatically.
The way it works is pretty clever. Traditional thermal curing takes a lot of time and energy, but this laser approach triggers the same chemical crosslinking in a fraction of the time. Less heat needed, faster throughput, lower energy costs. PPG has already built pilot finishing lines with IPG's PhotoniCURE system at their facility in Strongsville, Ohio, and they've got a research lab set up near Pittsburgh to test feasibility.
What caught my attention is the sustainability angle. They're not just chasing speed here. PPG's been investing in powder coatings made with recycled PET and free of PFAS, designed to cure with minimal waste. Whirlpool is running pilot trials on appliance components to see how different powder formulations perform with this new curing method.
The timing seems right. More manufacturers are pushing toward sustainable practices, and laser curing checks that box while improving efficiency. PPG's been working on this for a while, and now with a major appliance maker involved, it looks like the technology is moving from lab to real production soon. The curing systems could start seeing real demand once they prove the economics work at scale.
