Just noticed Walmart got downgraded by an analyst from Erste Group today. Stock's down around 4% on the news. The reason? Valuation. Apparently the P/E ratio hit nearly 47x earnings, which is pretty steep for a defensive play. That's way above what peer companies are trading at right now.
I get why Walmart's been such a solid hold - up 28% this past year, and the company's done an impressive job building out e-commerce, advertising, and membership revenue streams. Plus it's a Dividend King with over 50 years of consecutive raises. When you understand how many shares a company has outstanding and calculate the earnings per share, you see why the valuation matters so much for determining real value.
But here's the thing - even great companies have limits. Yeah, Walmart deserves a premium for its competitive advantages, but at 47x earnings? That's probably pricing in a lot of good news already. Could still be a solid long-term hold, but don't expect massive gains in the near term at these levels.
