Just went down a rabbit hole looking at which states pay the most federal taxes, and the numbers are wild. Turns out Wyoming tops the list with the top 1% covering 54.7% of all federal income taxes there, but it's only about $2.5 billion total. Meanwhile, California's wealthy are paying $122 billion - that's absolutely massive. Florida hits $96 billion, Texas $81 billion, and New York $79 billion. So which states pay the most federal taxes in raw dollars? Definitely California, Florida, and Texas leading the charge.

What's interesting is the gap between percentage share and actual dollars. Wyoming has the highest tax burden ratio but way fewer high earners, while states like California have both huge populations and concentrated wealth. The top 1% in these big states are literally funding a huge chunk of the federal system. Florida's top earners are at 26% average tax rate, New York's hitting 27.6%, Connecticut 28.1% - some serious numbers.

The data shows which states pay the most federal taxes really depends on how you look at it. If you're talking percentage of total taxes, it's Wyoming and Florida. If you're talking absolute dollars, it's the big coastal and southern states. Either way, the wealth concentration is pretty staggering. Makes you think about where all that money actually goes.
