Just looked into what is a good income to actually live comfortably in Texas and the numbers are pretty interesting. Apparently a single person can get by on around 75k in most Texas cities according to some recent data, which honestly isn't terrible compared to other states. But here's where it gets tricky - the median salary in Texas is sitting at about 68,744, so a lot of people are actually falling short of that mark.
The breakdown they use is pretty straightforward: 50% of your income goes to necessities, 30% toward lifestyle stuff, and 20% for savings and debt. Using that formula, Houston and El Paso come out as the most affordable options for both individuals and families. If you're thinking about Austin though, you're looking at a completely different ballgame. A single person there needs closer to 100k to live comfortably, and families need around 224k. That's a massive jump compared to other Texas cities.
So what is a good income really depends on where in Texas you're looking. If affordability matters to you, sticking to Houston, El Paso, Laredo or Lubbock makes more sense financially than going for Austin. The reality is that what is a good income varies so much by location that you can't just look at state averages. Your spending habits and family size matter too, but location is honestly the biggest factor. Most people seem to be doing okay somewhere in that 45k to 100k range depending on where they are and what their priorities are.
