What is the story of Amazon, and why did the stock fall despite the great numbers?

$AMZN
Earnings per share exceeded expectations by 68%.
Revenues exceeded expectations. AWS exceeded expectations. Advertising exceeded expectations. Future guidance exceeded expectations.

Nevertheless, the stock dropped more than 3% in after-hours trading.
This is the real question that deserves an answer.

Read the fine print
The quarterly net profit includes $16.8 billion in non-operational gains from Amazon’s investments in Anthropic. sec

Remove this number, and profits will shrink sharply.

Google relied on paper gains from investments.
Amazon did the same.
The difference is that this time, the market did not applaud.

The real whale: AWS
The AWS platform achieved $37.6 billion in revenue with 28% growth
And the highest growth rate in 15 consecutive quarters.

AWS’s operating income alone reached $14.2 billion in one quarter.

That means AWS generates nearly 60% of Amazon’s total operating income.
A company that sells everything from books to airplanes, but its real engine is servers.

A number you’ve never heard before
Amazon announced that its projects in chip manufacturing—Graviton, Trainium, and Nitro—exceeded an annual revenue rate of $20 billion,
With triple-digit annual growth.

Amazon doesn’t just buy Nvidia chips.
It makes its own chips, sells them, and grows rapidly beyond anyone’s imagination.

On the Bedrock AI platform, more codes were processed in the first quarter of 2026 than in all previous years combined,
With a 170% quarter-over-quarter increase in customer spending.

The true cost of the future
Capital expenditure reached $44.2 billion in one quarter,
Compared to $25 billion in the same quarter last year.

The direct result: free cash flow over twelve months plummeted to just $1.2 billion,
After being $25.9 billion in the same period last year. sec

Amazon is spending today what it will only earn after years.
This is not wasteful—
This is the engineering of the future. But the market wants patience, and Amazon is asking for time.

Andy Jassy and one sentence
He said in his statement:
"We're in the middle of some of the biggest inflections of our lifetime, we're well positioned to lead."

The real translation: We are in the midst of the biggest transformations in our history, and we are leading.

The numbers confirm that.
But the market asks: at what cost?

So why did the stock fall?
Because the smart investor sees what’s not in the headline:
Inflated profits from paper gains in Anthropic.
Free cash flow that is almost disappearing.
Capital spending that doubles every year.
And open questions about when this massive build will turn into sustainable profit margins.

Amazon is building bigger than it is earning.
And that has always been its style. But the market’s patience has limits.

Three giants announced their results in two days. Microsoft, Google, and Amazon. All racing to build the same thing: AI infrastructure. And all spending at rates the world has never seen before.

The question you should ask: who will win this race? and when?

Stay tuned to find out...
