so i've been looking into refinancing my student loans and honestly there's way more options than i thought. turns out a bunch of banks that refinance student loans actually exist, which surprised me since i always assumed you had to go through some online startup for this.
started comparing Citizens, Discover, Laurel Road, SoFi and PNC because they all seem to have decent programs. what's interesting is they all have pretty different vibes. like Citizens lets you refinance even if you didn't finish your degree, which is kind of wild. Discover has zero fees which seems too good to be true but apparently it's legit. Laurel Road and SoFi both let you refinance like 100% of your debt which is huge if you're drowning.
the rates seem to hover in that 1.7-8% range depending on if you go fixed or variable, but honestly every lender is offering some discount if you set up autopay. some of these banks that refinance student loans also throw in random perks like financial coaching or loyalty bonuses if you already bank with them.
downside is that most major national banks don't even touch student loans anymore. Chase, Bank of America, they're all out of the game. and you gotta have decent credit obviously. also the loan servicers are usually third parties so you're not dealing directly with the bank.
the whole process seems pretty straightforward though - just need your SSN, income info, and current loan balance. been getting pre-approval quotes from a few of them to compare. thinking i'll probably go with whoever gives me the best rate after all the discounts.
anyone else done this recently? curious if the actual process is as smooth as they make it sound
