Been doing some research on the best country to retire in lately, and honestly the options are way more interesting than I thought. Most people assume you're stuck with Florida or Arizona, but there's actually a whole world of places that are way cheaper and honestly more fun.
I found this analysis comparing like 15 countries using cost of living, healthcare quality, safety and all that. The data's from a couple years back but still pretty relevant. Some standouts: Malaysia came in as one of the absolute cheapest with rent around 312 a month, Japan has solid healthcare at 79.7 quality rating plus rent under 500, and Taiwan's got this crazy combo of low rent (399) and excellent healthcare (86.4). Portugal and Croatia are interesting if you want Europe but don't want to spend a fortune.
What surprised me most was how the best country to retire in really depends on what you prioritize. Like if safety matters most, Japan and Taiwan both score in the high 70s-80s for safety. If you want walkable European vibes on a budget, Czech Republic and Slovenia are solid. Hungary and Bulgaria are literally the cheapest options with rent under 500, though healthcare ratings are lower.
The Gulf countries like Qatar, Kuwait and Oman are weird because they have high purchasing power but also higher rents, so the math gets weird depending on your situation. And honestly some of these metrics can shift, so I'd verify current prices before making any moves.
Tbh the best country to retire in for you probably comes down to three things: how much you actually need to spend monthly, whether you care about weather and culture, and what kind of healthcare access matters to you. Some people I know have done Malaysia and loved it, others swear by Portugal for the lifestyle. The nice thing is there's actually real options now instead of just picking between retirement communities in the US.
