So I just found out that most states won't let you buy lottery tickets with a credit card, which honestly seems backwards. Like, you can charge literally anything else to your card, but not a lottery ticket? Apparently only 17 states allow it, and even then it depends on the retailer and your bank. American Express straight-up bans gambling transactions, and Visa and MasterCard won't even comment on their lottery policies. The whole thing comes down to debt concerns—credit counselors worry that people without cash on hand shouldn't be using plastic to gamble. Fair point, I guess.
Here's where it gets messier: if you try to buy tickets online through third-party reseller sites, you're basically trusting some random company to actually purchase them for you. And the official Powerball site warns that these sites operate in a legal gray area. Only state lotteries and licensed retailers can legally sell tickets, so those sketchy online marketplaces? Probably not legit. Even some states that technically allow online lottery purchases—like Illinois and Georgia—still require you to be in-state. Tennessee takes it further and only accepts cash. So depending on where you live, your options range from "use any payment method you want" to "cash only, sorry." It's wild how fragmented the rules are.
