Volkswagen weighs opening European factory capacity to Chinese partners as overcapacity pressure builds

🚗 Volkswagen is considering bringing China-developed vehicles into the European market or sharing European factory capacity with its Chinese partners to address excess production capacity.
🏭 CEO Oliver Blume said the group will assess potential cooperation opportunities with its Chinese partners in Europe, as VW faces growing pressure from weaker sales, high costs, and intensifying competition in electric vehicles.
🔎 The sensitive point is that VW currently works with partners such as SAIC, FAW, JAC, and holds a stake in Xpeng, while these companies do not yet have factories in Europe. If implemented, this could mark a notable shift in Europe’s auto production structure.
⚠️ VW downplayed concerns that such a move would help Chinese brands gain more market share in Europe, but the market may still view it as a signal that Germany’s auto industry is being forced to adapt faster to pressure from Chinese EVs and domestic factory overcapacity.
