Just spent way too long trying to figure out how to actually reach someone at the IRS, so figured I'd share what I learned since apparently I'm not the only one confused about this.

Okay so if you need to call about your refund status or have questions about your filing, there's a federal tax phone number you can use. For individuals it's 800-829-1040, or if you speak other languages there's 833-553-9895. They're available 7am to 7pm your local time, though honestly the wait is brutal. During tax season it's like 4 minutes average, but between May and December? More like 11 minutes. And don't even think about calling Monday or Tuesday lol, everyone's doing that.

There's also an automated line for refund checks at 800-829-1954 if you don't want to wait - that one's actually pretty convenient. But real talk, checking the IRS website is faster if you're just tracking your refund status.

If you're dealing with an offset (where they take your refund to pay off federal debt) or need a payment plan, there's a different federal tax phone number setup for that too - 800-304-3107 for offset questions. For payment plans you can call the number on your notice or hit 800-829-1040 again.

They also have live chat now on their website if you hate phone calls like me. Just search for IRS live chat and you can talk to someone, though heads up they can't see your personal account details - just general tax questions.

Biggest tips: Don't call unprepared (seriously, write down what you need beforehand), don't call late in the day when everyone's tired, and just be chill with whoever answers. They're dealing with frustrated people all day. The federal tax phone number system isn't perfect but it works if you're strategic about when you call.
